When disaster strikes, you probably won’t have the luxury of ordering DoorDash. That’s where emergency food kits like the 4Patriots 72-Hour Survival Food Kit come in. They promise to keep you fed through storms, blackouts, and zombie apocalypses (okay, maybe not that last one). But does it actually deliver? I spent 72+ hours eating nothing but this survival food to find out.

Let’s Address the Elephant in the Room

Look, as a liberal, the “4Patriots” branding makes me cringe a little. But I own a freeze-dryer and test emergency food regularly, so I’m not letting politics get in the way of an honest product evaluation. At $9.67 per person per day, this kit is competitively priced for the emergency food category.

What You Get (Nutritionally Speaking)

The 72-hour kit provides roughly 1,600 calories per day across 20 servings. The macros tell an important story: 74% carbs, 11% protein, and 15% fat. That’s a carb-heavy ratio designed more for quick energy than balanced nutrition. Keep that in mind if you’re planning extended emergency use.

The Real-World Test

Day 1 started with Sunrise Oatmeal. Following directions (add boiling water, stir) gave me oatmeal soup. Let it sit longer to firm up, or use less water. Portions were generous enough to refrigerate leftovers.

The Creamy Rice & Chicken delivered surprising volume. It was more than enough for three meals. The mac and cheese felt skimpy for a serious pasta enthusiast like me, stretching to two meals.

My son Ivan and I also tested the chili (sold separately). It was bland, which might actually be a feature. Most freeze-dried meals are aggressively salty. This milder approach could appeal to people watching sodium.

The Variety Problem

The truth is, there was enough food, but by hour 60, I was sick of the limited options. Three days of the same rotation gets old fast. If you’re building a longer-term stockpile, plan to supplement with additional variety.

The Bottom Line

At 1,600 calories per day, this is survival nutrition but not comfortable eating. The 25-year shelf life and disaster-resistant packaging make this a solid emergency foundation, but treat it as a starting point, not your complete solution. And maybe overlook the name if you’re a dirty pinko like me.
