Mattress trial periods are awesome tools for testing a bed in the exact environment you’ll actually be using it in: your bedroom. Yet many brands try to reduce losses by adding hidden fees and secret loopholes in the fine print. Fortunately, not all manufacturers do this. Unfortunately, your eyes are likely to glaze over as you search for what voids a mattress trial period. After testing more than 100 mattresses and reading the trial period and warranty fine print for all of them, I’ve compiled the clauses most likely to trip you up.

The 30-night hostage situation
Most brands won’t let you return the mattress until you’ve slept on it for at least 30 nights. Nobody is coming to your house to verify this. There is no mattress inspector peering through your blinds with a clipboard. They’re making sure you gave it a fair shot and quietly hoping that in 30 nights you’ll either forget the trial exists or simply get used to the thing. In fairness, it does take about two weeks to adjust to a new mattress. So the rule is reasonable. It’s also a bet, and the house usually wins.
Your trial clock started without you
The countdown begins the day the mattress is delivered, not the day you finally get around to opening it. Leave it boxed for three weeks, and you’ve donated three weeks of your trial to the company. Don’t do that anyway: Compressed foam can take damage sitting in the box. Two weeks is my hard ceiling. I open mine immediately and let it off-gas before I sleep on it.
“Free returns” with a small asterisk the size of a mattress
Risk-free. No-hassle. Free returns. Then you find the restocking fee. Or the return shipping. Or the haul-away charge. Sleep Number’s return and restocking fees add up to $250 or more. 3Z Brands — Leesa, Brooklyn Bedding, Helix, Birch, Bear, and Nolah — will refund you in full unless you’re in Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada, where they take $100 off the top. Some brands also make disposal your problem entirely, and a lot of charities won’t take a mattress somebody has already slept on.
What voids a mattress trial period? Stains
A single stain voids your trial period and your warranty simultaneously. Bloody nose, leaky pen, a scab from your recent bear fight: It doesn’t matter. This is the clause that actually burns people. Buy a mattress protector before your first night. They’re about twenty bucks. I’ve tested dozens of them, and it’s the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy. I’ve purchased this one for several of my beds. It passed my waterproof testing, even after five times through the laundry.
Warranty landmines
Removing the law tag voids it, even though the tag is perforated like it wants to be torn off and says “under penalty of law” in a way that suggests federal prison. Most warranties also specify a foundation type, including slat spacing, no box spring, that kind of thing. Commercial use voids coverage, and yes, that can include listing the room on Airbnb. You typically must be the original owner, must have bought from an authorized retailer, and must not have bought it on clearance. Most “lifetime” warranties go prorated after year 10.
Read it the day you buy
Brands revise these terms constantly, so a policy summary written last year is fiction. Check the actual page to find out what voids a mattress trial period the day you purchase it. And the best return is the one you never make, since returned mattresses often end up in a landfill, so try beds in a showroom, read real testing, and buy something you’ll actually keep.
