Tempo meal delivery promises chef-designed, dietitian-approved meals ready in just two to four minutes. After testing five different meals, I can confirm they’ve absolutely nailed the “fast” part. The “good” part? Well, that’s where things get complicated.

What Is Tempo Meal Delivery?

Launched in 2023 by Home Chef (part of the Kroger family), Tempo is a prepared meal delivery service for busy professionals who prioritize speed above all else. Each single-serving meal arrives fresh, requires zero prep, and heats in the microwave faster than you can decide what to watch on Netflix.

Pricing and Plans

Tempo’s pricing ranges from $10.98 to $15.98 per serving, depending on order size, plus $10.99 shipping. Order 16+ meals weekly for the best per-meal rate. They offer flexible subscriptions with easy skipping and cancellation—one area where Tempo actually excels.

The Food Quality Reality Check

Here’s where my experience diverged sharply from Tempo’s marketing materials. The braised beef resembled dog food in both appearance and texture, with unseasoned broccoli and potatoes that were simultaneously soft and crunchy.

The filet mignon showed more promise with decent seasoning, though it could’ve been more tender. Our pescatarian tester praised the salmon—finally, a win. The meatballs disappointed so thoroughly that even my meatball-obsessed kid refused them, though I appreciated the seasoning despite the lack of browning.

Overall, the presentation was unappetizing. Think of an airline meal tray, not an Instagram-worthy dinner.

Portion Sizes

Light eaters will find portions adequate, but if you’re hungry after a workout or have a hearty appetite, you’ll likely need two meals. This effectively doubles the already-premium pricing.

Who Should Try Tempo?

Tempo works best for office lunches when time is genuinely limited, or as emergency backup meals when cooking is completely off the table. If you’re extremely busy, not particularly picky about food quality, and value convenience above taste, Tempo might work for you.

Bottom Line

Tempo solved the convenience problem brilliantly, but forgot that food should taste good. At this price point, you’re better off with a grocery store rotisserie chicken or supporting local restaurants. Save your money and your taste buds.

Best for: Time-crunched office workers, emergency meal backup
Skip if: You care about food quality, seasoning, or visual appeal
