Consider this scenario: You sleep on a pillow that puts your neck at a weird angle and awake sluggish with crippling neck pain. Then, you hop in the car to drive to work. Since your neck hurts, you can’t really turn to check your blind spot, so you miss the 18-wheeler barreling down on you. It crushes you and your Lamborghini. Incidents just like this happen thousands of times every day. Sleeping on a pillow that isn’t right for your sleep position or body type can literally ruin your life. I’ve put together this Luxome Layr Adjustable Pillow review to help address this issue and potentially save millions of lives.

Luxome is based in Michigan, where I am! I don’t know these people — not all Michiganders know each other — but I appreciate locally made products, which provide numerous benefits. The Layr pillow is unique because it comes with inserts that allow you to customize the feel and loft of your pillow for a good night’s rest. I slept on several configurations of the pillow for many weeks. Below are my experiences with it.

Luxome Layr Adjustable Pillow Review: Setup and First Impressions

The Luxome Layr is made up of CertiPUR-US-certified foams, down alternative, cotton insert covers, and a machine-washable outer cover. The whole shooting match weighs less than four pounds, making it easy to move around at night. I tested the Queen/Standard size pillow, which is currently available only in packs of two. (King is available as a single.)

The queen two-pack comes with

  • 2 soft down alternative inserts
  • 2 medium shredded memory foam and down alternative inserts
  • Firm 1-inch solid memory foam insert
  • Firm 2-inch solid memory foam insert
  • 2 extra insert covers

After several nights of trial and error, I found my favorite for side sleeping was the 2-inch firm insert paired with the soft down alternative.

What We Liked about the Luxome Layr

The main features we liked about the Luxome Layr are

  1. Adjustable for a custom feel
  2. Inserts stayed put and didn’t bunch up
  3. Sleeps cool

You can buy a bunch of pillows, try them out for a few nights to see if they’re right for you, and keep the ones you want with the hope you can get refunds on the rest. However, a better alternative is to purchase an adjustable pillow that accommodates your unique contours. The Luxome Layr features several inserts that you can mix and match to find the perfect combination for you. They also provide helpful hints on what works best for different sleep styles to get you started.

With some pillows, the filling may end up on the sides, leaving a significant imprint where your head is, and thus not providing your neck with enough support. That’s why you always see people fluffing their pillows in movies before going to bed. Yet, the Luxome pillow’s inserts didn’t bunch up or sag. The pillow was comfortable the moment I put my fat head on it.

The cover is made of a cooling bamboo blend and features a mesh band around the sides for airflow. This works swimmingly for keeping me cool at night.

What We Didn’t Like

I slept like crap for the first week or so as I tested the Luxome Layr. I wanted to try as many insert configurations as possible to find the best fit. I tried 1-inch firm/medium, soft/1-inch firm, 1-inch firm/soft, soft/2-inch firm, and medium/2-inch firm, which gave me awful neck pain. I finally settled on 2-inch firm on top with soft below. Finding the right Layr configuration requires patience, but the patience pays off.

This may not be the best pillow for combination sleepers, particularly if you frequently switch between sleeping on your side and stomach. Typically, a pillow that provides good head and neck support while you’re sleeping on your side will put your neck at an awful angle when you switch to your stomach. That said, you could opt for the queen two-pack and set up one pillow for each of your most common sleeping positions.

After you clean the cover, putting the inserts back in can be a pain, but at least the cover is machine-washable, and you should use a pillowcase anyway. Just clean the pillowcase!

Who Should Buy the Luxome Pillow?

$235 is a lot for two pillows. But let’s put it in perspective. If the pillows last you at least two years, then you’ll pay less than 33 cents a night for them. I don’t know about you, but I’d gladly spend that to wake up well-rested and refreshed. Additionally, Luxome marked the set down to $145 on Black Friday last year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do it again this year.

Ultimately, I’d recommend this pillow to anyone who wants to fine-tune their sleep experience. If you often wake with neck pain, give it a try. It just might save your life.
